Let Your Hands Settle First
Some days the thoughts will not slow down because we ask them to. Telling a racing mind to "just relax" is a bit like telling the weather to change.
So try starting somewhere else. Start with your hands.
A two-minute practice
You need one page, one pen and a place to sit.
- Put both hands flat on the page. Notice the paper. Is it cool, smooth, a little rough?
- Pick up the pen and feel its weight. Hold it a moment before you use it.
- Breathe out slowly, longer than you breathed in. Do that three times. No need to count perfectly.
- Color one small shape. Just one. Watch the color fill it.
- Name three colors you can see in the room. Out loud, or in your head.
- Say one sentence to yourself, on an out-breath: "I can do the next right thing." If another sentence fits you better, use that one.
That is the whole practice. Nothing to get right.
Why start with the body?
When the mind is loud, the body is often the quieter door. You do not have to argue with a thought to notice the pen in your hand. Noticing is enough for now.
Some people find their thinking feels a little slower after a few minutes like this. Some do not, and that is fine too. The practice is not a test. It is a small pause you are allowed to take, as many times a day as you like.
It also is not a replacement for anything that is already helping you. Keep your people, your meetings, your counselor, your routines. This sits alongside them.
Try it, then tell us

Color slowly. Breathe. Begin again.
